Upcoming Regulations Requiring Inert Gas Systems on Smaller Tankers

14-02-2012

The regulations on preventing explosions on oil and chemical tankers transporting low-flash point cargoes are going to be tightened. A working group of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has already made draft amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (SOLAS) regulations.

In the current section concerning the application of inert gas systems, it states, in brief, that for tankers of 20,000 tonnes deadweight and upwards, the protection of the cargo tanks shall be achieved by a fixed inert gas system. It is suggested to change this paragraph so that it will even apply for ships of 8,000 tonnes deadweight and upwards when carrying a certain kind of cargo.

If these amendments are approved they will become effective from 1 January 2015. This means there will be an increasing number of tankers that need to install approved nitrogen generators on board since ships that fit into this category must have a functional and approved inert gas system by the beginning of 2015.

In connection to this, we are pleased to offer the G361x Oxygen Analyzing System for nitrogen generators, which is designed to measure oxygen concentrations in nitrogen. Our oxygen analyzers have achieved the MED certificate and product type approvals from Lloyds Register, Bureau Veritas and DNV. Click here to read more about the G361x Oxygen Analyzing System.
